Whether you've been teaching for years or are just starting your poi journey, becoming a certified SpinPoi instructor will give you the credibility and resources you need to facilitate safe and engaging poi sessions in a health/wellness context.


Poi is a fun, affordable, accessible tool for keeping the mind and body fit. It has been scientifically proven to improve physical and cognitive health for older adults (learn more about the research) and is enjoyed as a form of play, performance, and fitness around the world. SpinPoi certifications provide the opportunity for anyone to become a qualified poi instructor, and will ensure you have the knowledge, tools, and support to lead safe and engaging poi sessions in a wellness context.  In addition, you will gain access to exclusive resources to help you on your journey, and become part of the global community of certified instructors.


Poi in Aged Care (PAC) Rest Home & Hospital

This certification is specifically for working with poi and rest home and/or hospital level adults in aged care who will primarily stay seated during exercise.

Other certifications

At this time we are only offering the PAC: Rest Home & Hospital certification. However, we are in the process of developing further certifications for other populations (i.e. independently living older adults, youth, general certification, etc.). Please carefully review the Application Instructions .pdf below before moving forward with your application. It is important to ensure you understand what is involved in applying, and that you are eligible to apply, before proceeding.


In order to pass the written and practical exams, you will need the study materials below. The Poi in Aged Care: Sit & Spin Guide must be purchased ($35 USD). All other resources can be accessed free of charge. It should be noted that the Practical Exam Evaluation Checklists are included in the study materials, as the exam requires knowledge around what is expected for the practical exam. If you are new to poi, you may also need the SpinPoi Fundamentals Course in order to pass the practical exam.


Once you have carefully reviewed the application instructions and study materials, you are ready to apply. This can be done by clicking the “apply now” button in the section below. This will take you to a page in which you must pay the $115 USD application fee. Once paid, you will gain access to the written exam. Upon receiving 100% on the written exam (you may take the exam as many times as needed) you will be asked to submit your qualifying documents and your practical exam. This will complete the application process, and your application will then be reviewed


Upon successful review of your application, you will join the global community of official SpinPoi certified instructors and gain access to additional resources to support you on your journey.

Yes! You will need to do a bit of practicing, but anyone can learn the poi movements necessary in order to fulfill the certification requirements. The SpinPoi Fundamentals course is a great resource for learning all the building blocks of poi.

Yes! A certain level of experience working with older adults is required for the PAC Rest Home & Hospital certification, but if you have never worked with older adults before don’t fret. Try reaching out to your local retirement villages/aged care facilities and explain that you are interested in teaching some poi classes. They will likely be excited to try a new activity, and you will gain experience working with older adults, which will be necessary in order to pass the practical exam for the certification. 

It costs $150 USD to apply ($115 application fee, and $35 for the Poi in Aged Care: Sit & Spin Guide).

Yes, the whole certification can be completed online. If you do want some extra help, Kate offers in person training courses which will prepare you for completing the certification. The police check and letter of recommendation are hard requirements, so unfortunately you will not be eligible apply for the certification.

The written exam can be taken as many times as you like with no additional fee. Each time you take the exam you will receive immediate feedback on which questions you got wrong and where the correct answer can be found.

The practical exam can be resubmitted as many times as you like for an additional fee of $25 USD. If you do not pass the practical exam you will receive feedback on what parts needs improvement.

The review process typically takes 1-2 weeks. If you do not hear back within this time frame, please feel free to get in touch with Kate at kate@spinpoi.com to enquire about the progress of your application review.

As a certified instructor you will gain access to additional resources to support you on your journey, such as poi routines, documents to help you run your classes smoothly (consent forms, invoices, etc.) and you will gain access to the SpinPoi certified instructors forum.  You will also receive a certificate and be listed on spinpoi.com.

Your certification is valid for 1 year. Before your certification is due to expire, you will receive an email with instructions on how to renew. This process will include a brief refresher course and questions regarding your work as a poi instructor over the past year. The fee for renewal is $75 USD.

Once you have paid the application fee there is no refund. Please look over the application instructions carefully, and be sure you would like to apply for certification before paying the fee.
